Three day tour of The Yorkshire Dales
and The Lake District
We have come up with a great road trip which is a complete tour of the Lake District and also takes in The Yorkshire Dales.
Starting from Kendal heading south to Ingleton, take a left here towards Hawes where you will tackle the fantastic Buttertubs Pass. Over the other side you will pass through Ravenstonedale, Shap and Pooley Bridge, down the west shore of Ullswater you will arrive at our first recommendation, The Inn on The Lake, a very nice hotel set in wonderful surroundings. https://www.lakedistricthotels.net/innonthelake/
Day Two will take you from Ullswater over another great mountain road, Kirkstone Pass, this leads down into Windermere and Bowness. Travel along the east shore of Windermere towards Newby Bridge, take a right at Greenodd and you are on your way past Coniston Lake and through Coniston town. Onwards to Ambleside and Grasmere (don’t miss the gingerbread), up and over Dunmail raise to Keswick where you will stay the night. Keswick is a lively little town which has a great vibe with plenty of pubs, bars and shops, no recommendations as such but a lot of hotels to choose from here depending on whether you would like a busy or quiet atmosphere. https://www.keswick.org/where-to-stay/hotels
Your final day will take in even more spectacular views as you head towards the coast passing Buttermere and Crummock water. Make a stop at Ravenglass and head back over the wilderness of Corney Fell, you will pass back though Backbarrow where the Lakeland Motor Museum is situated and back towards Kendal. Once the car is back with us you can either stay in Kendal for your final evening or head to Kirkby Lonsdale which is a really nice market town close by, alternatively you could spend the evening in Bowness where there is a bit more going on.
This really is a fantastic route which takes in pretty much the whole of The Lakes and could be as leisurely or as thrilling as you would like. The scenery is simply stunning throughout and in addition there are lots of places to stop and visit, such as the Ullswater Steamers, Windermere Cruises, The Larl Ratty Steam train at Ravenglass and The Motor Museum at Backbarrow. These are just a few places and we can make more suggestions to suit your style.
